Manchester United has announced the appointment of former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjær as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018/19 season.
“Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” said Solskjær.
Ed Woodward, Executive Vice Chairman, said:“Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles. His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”
Mourinho was sacked on Tuesday after United fell 3-1 to Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield.
The move ended two and a half years in charge for Mourinho, whose final season at the helm was blighted by poor results on the pitch and squabbles with his players and club hierarchy off it.
Zinedine Zidane, Diego Simeone and Mauricio Pochettino have all been mooted as potential long-term replacements for the Portuguese but for now, it appears to be Solskjaer’s job for the short-term future.
