How Michael Carrick emerged from the shadows to be Man United Manager

Jose Mourinho

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. The opposite of this statement can also be true especially when you look at the events happening at Old Trafford.

In the aftermath of the Manchester United’s decision to fire mediocre manager Jose Mourinho, the club has announced that Michael Carrick will be taking over as interim Manager. Manchester United is the biggest club in the world and this is a dream that even Carrick would not have dreamed about last season. In more than 30 years, there have been only five coaches in the Old Trafford dugout, that is if you add Ryan Giggs in the mix.

Appointing Carrick, just shows how high he is valued at the club. Carrick was handed a first-team coaching role by Mourinho after retiring as a player at the end of last season.

But he has no experience as a manager and United could opt for a more experienced boss as they look to arrest their slide and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford for just over two and a half years and took charge of 144 games, winning 84 of them.

He led them to Europa League and League Cup glory in his first season and guided United to a second-place finish in the Premier League last season.

However, his struggles have been well—documented this term and, as well as their lowly league position, he has endured a number of fall-outs with senior players and has been publicly critical of some of his senior stars.

Despite that, United thanked him for his service in a statement issued on their official website.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” it read.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
