The Uhuru-Raila handshake added a new spin in Uhuru’s succession politics where his deputy William Ruto was previously seen as an automatic successor.  Uhuru and Raila have recently been closer than before and their fresh relationship saw the president visit Raila’s Kisumu and Siaya strongholds between Thursday, December 13 and Friday, December 14, for the first time since his reelection in October 2017. Raila had earlier indicated that he would be taking a back seat in the country’s politics to give more time his new appointment as African Union special envoy on Africa infrastructure development. While remarking on the subject, Uhuru added more confusion when he said his choice will shock many.
