President Uhuru Kenyatta may have a huge standing debt with the Chinese but when it comes to small monies, be sure that the President will pay it all back. Uhuru has today after over one year, finally settled a Ksh. 40 debt with a street vendor who offered him chewing gum in August, 2017.

The hawker, Dennis Murimi Wachira met Interior PS Karanja Kibicho who settled the Head of State’s account.

Ningependa kwanza nikulipe hiyo forty bob, alafu after that, sasa tuongee, (First I’d like to pay you, your Kshs40 that the president owes you before we can discuss other matters)” the Interior PS stated.

The incident happened in September 2017, when Uhuru made an impromptu visit to Burma market along Jogoo road, just about the same time that fate had placed Murimi within the vicinity as part of the crowd that gathered at the scene to catch a glimpse of the president.

So when the unexpected opportunity presented itself, Murimi, seized the moment for what he genuinely believed would he a life changing encounter.

“I lifted an orange PK chewing gum and shouted while gesturing to him ‘Mr President, can I sell you this?” Murimi said.

As you would expect, the President’s security detail attempted to block him by shoving him out of the way. However, the president, who was addressing the crowd from the sunroof of his vehicle, had already taken notice of Murimi and quickly gestured to the security personnel to let go of the young man.

“Everything happened so fast. I couldn’t believe it. When I got close to his vehicle, all I could do was to offer him a mint gum worth 20 shillings,” he added.

Murimi and PS Kibicho had casual conversation with the PS seeking to find out more about Murimi’s business.

Murimi explained that he lived in Shauri Moyo where he is the only provider for his family. He now wants the President to pay him in kind and help him get a decent job.

Kile ningetaka ni rais anipee kitu nawezafanya na maisha yanguniweze kusaidia watuwangu (I’d like for the President to help me out with an opportunity to improve my life and that of my family)” he told the PS.

Kibicho instructed Murimi’s chief to gather his documents and figure out how they can assist the young man.

Do you think the PS will actually help Murimi get a decent job?
