Shame!!Mother arrested after “cutting” her two daughters

The fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) has been fraught with both  success and failure , resistance and acceptance. Since Kenya banned the practice in 2011, FGM is now increasingly  conducted secretly in homes by the communities practicing the barbaric culture.

Mothers are supposed to take good care of their children, but this is not the case for  a 38-year-old woman from Luluma village in Igembe South, Meru County, who has been arrested and detained at Maua Police Station for allegedly taking her two daughters through FGM.

Makiri sub-location Assistant Chief Moses Mwithalii said the two girls are also under police custody, adding that FGM is illegal and outlawed.

According to Mr. Mwithalii, the two girls had already undergone the cut and were in seclusion when they were taken into custody.

The administrator further warned those engaging in the outdated cultural tradition that they risk arrest and prosecution.

He also appealed to school going girls currently on holiday to report their parents to the police if they feel threatened and/or are forced to undergo FGM.

Do you think leaders have failed in the fight against FGM practice?
