It looks like the famous handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga did not trickle down to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko. While the former Prime Minister seems to be supportive of Uhuru’s government, one things is now certain, should Mike Sonko run for a second term in office, he will not have the support of Hon. Raila Odinga.

The ODM leader has today endorsed the Westlands Member of Parliament, Tim Wanyonyi as the next Governor of Nairobi County.

Raila Odinga made the announcement today when he was speaking at a football match sponsored by Mr. Wanyonyi at Kabete Technical Training Institute where he said that the MP will be ODM’s flag bearer for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

“Although I’m here as a football player and not a politician, I want to say our next Nairobi Governor is Tim. He is doing a good job, and deserves the ODM ticket in 2022,” Raila said.

Raila’s endorsement comes at a time when 2022 succession politics is taking shape in Nairobi.

ODM’s Evans Kidero was the first Nairobi Governor in 2013 but lost to Jubilee’s Mike Sonko last year during the 2017 general election.

The former Prime Minister further said the MP’s development speaks for itself saying that it was the reason he attended the match to support him.

Raila, who has been at the forefront of supporting Kenyan football said the standard of the game in Kenya is rising especially after Harambee Stars’ qualification for the African Cup of Nations.

“Football is now doing well in Kenya. Recently, I accompanied Gor Mahia to Everton and I was proud of the game they played,” he said.

He added that the reason he accompanied Gor Mahia to England when they played against Everton is because he wanted to nurture more talent.

Wanyonyi has also received support from other ODM leaders who attended the cup final.

Do you think it’s too early for the succession politics?
