Revealed: Why the 55th Jamhuri Day Celebrations will be one for the books

Tomorrow, the entire country will be celebrating 55 years since our beloved nation Kenya gained independence. However, the 55th Jamhuri Day celebrations will be one of a kind and different from all others as it will include a special military display that has not been witnessed in the recent past.

According to Nairobi Regional Commissioner Kang’ethe Thuku, the celebrations will go on as planned but with a new and special display from the 17 battalion which will be the highlight of the day.

“The highlight of the day will be the ‘trooping of the colour’ by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

“This year’s Jamhuri Day will be special as the 17 battalion, the Kenya Rifles, a unit in the Kenya Army will be presented with regimental colour,” Thuku revealed.

Tomorrow’s celebration will take place at the newly refurbished 30,000 seater Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi and will be presided by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Thuku added that members of the public are welcome to the event urging those who plan to attend to be orderly.

“As our top priority, we have conducted a comprehensive threat and risk assessment and made stringent security arrangements to protect the lives and property of all those attending.

He further said that everyone who plans to attend the celebrations will be subject to thorough security screening at the entrances adding that police officers will be on high alert to respond promptly and decisively to any incidents that may occur inside or outside the stadium.

Jamhuri Day is a Kenyan national holiday celebrated every year on the 12th December. Jamhuri is Swahili for Republic and as such Jamhuri Day is also known as Republic Day or Independence Day. Kenya became an independent republic after gaining full self-governance from the United Kingdom on 1st June 1963.

Jamhuri Day is one of Kenya’s most important holidays due to its historical significance and is celebrated with many events such as feasts, political speeches and parades, all of which celebrate the country’s cultural heritage.
