Any body here remembers the last minute January rush that involved buying books at Textbook Center and rushing home to cover them, or spending an entire afternoon at School Outfitters to get a new uniform and probably a new pair of toughees from Bata? If you don’t remember this then your parents are probably one of the few organized ones who got everything done before the Christmas season.

The 2019 education calendar has been released and will run for 38 weeks with the school year beginning in January and ending at the end of October/beginning of November, just before the national examinations.

In a circular released by the Ministry of Education, first and second term are expected to run for 14 weeks while third term will run for nine weeks for primary schools and 10 weeks for secondary schools.

Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang said that the first term is scheduled to start on January 2 and run through to April 5 with a half-term break from February 18 to 24.

Learners will then break for a two-week holiday before opening for second term on April 29 and end on August 2 with a half-term break between June 17 and 23.

Third term for primary and secondary schools is expected to run between August 26 to October 25 without any mid-term break.

The third term midterm break was scrapped by former Education CS Fred Matiang’i in a bid to secure the national exams and to avoid distracting candidates.

The 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE) will be held between October 28 and November 2 while the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will take place between November 4 and 29.

The school holiday and term dates released by the Ministry of Education are followed by primary and secondary schools as well as colleges across the country.
