Why Ruto is Yet to Honour his 50 Million Pledge to Harambee Stars Despite Qualification

National team Harambee Stars might have already secured an Africa Cup of Nations spot but the team is yet to get it’s hands of Deputy President William Ruto’s 50 million reward for it’s exploits.

Ruto Promised Harambee Stars the 50 million on October 12 prior to the team’s clash with Ethiopia, a clash that all but sealed the Stars’ qualification after edging out Ethiopia 3-o

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa is however optimistic the DP will honour the pledge despite the delays.

Mwendwa on Thursday said it is likely that the money will be delivered in March when the full team will be around.

“My feeling is that the government is up for it, they will pay the boys the Sh50 million. We are waiting for the Sports ministry and the DP give us further details,” Mwendwa said.

The Confederation of African Football Executive Committee made the confirmation last Friday.

Harambee Stars last qualified for the continental tournament 14 years ago.

“Once the money is released, we are going to give the players their bonuses,” he said.

“When you come forth with money, put it on the table and put it to rest. If you are transparent to the players, there will be no issue.,” Mwendwa said.

He said they are thinking of a 70:30 ration with the lion’s share going to the players, while the rest is used for paying debts.

This comes after the National team was nominated by Confederation for African Football (CAF) for the Team of the Year Award alongside Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Mauritania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

They top group “F” on seven points after four matches. Sebastien Migne’s charges were to host Sierra Leone in round five of the qualifiers but the fixture was cancelled by the Confederation of Africa Football (Caf) due to the West African nation’s suspension by Fifa.

How Should FKF use Ruto’s pledge to the team should he honour it?
