It looks like the speculations about Kenya Airways reducing the number of flights to New York were accurate. The Pride of Africa has today announced a plan to cut down the number of flights between New York and Nairobi to 5 days from the current 7 days.

Kenya Airways said that as of January 15, the airline will only fly direct to the United States on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday every week.

“Kenya Airways has today announced that it is adjusting the schedule for its Nairobi – New York route to 5 flights in a week effective 15th January 2019. Currently, the airline is flying this route daily,” reads the statement from the carrier.

In a statement made by the Kenya Airways Chief Executive Sebastian Mikosz, the decision to adjust frequency is only a strategic business decision adding that the airline is still strongly committed to the New York route and will continue to offer non-stop services to all its guests travelling between the two cities.

“As the only airline that offers a non-stop flight between East Africa and the USA, this route remains significant to us because of the role it plays in opening more economic and tourism growth opportunities for Kenya and East Africa,” he said.

Mr. Mikosz said that the decision to adjust the schedule is to cater for seasonality in line with global practices that allows airlines to reduce or add frequencies based on low or high seasons.

The  KQ boss also revealed that the airline would resume daily flights when demand increases adding that the airline is performing well for a route they have just entered into. He however admitted to the fact that they were facing competition from other East African countries whose air transport is growing exponentially.

“At the moment we are facing stiff competition from Rwanda and Tanzania who are expanding very fast in air traffic. We therefore need to pull our energy together to ensure that we make JKIA more attractive and marketable,” the CEO said.

The airline will depart from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 22:55 on the said days, arriving at John F. Kennedy (JFK) in New York at 06:25 the following day. It will then depart from the US at 12:00 and land at JKIA at 10:30 the following day.
