Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko seems to have learned the importance of staying true to oneself after he received public ridicule when he tried to put on an accent during the 2018 first ever global Sustainable Blue Economy Conference that was held in Nairobi towards the end of November.

While addressing the public the official commissioning of the KCB Foundation 2jiajiri Youth Empowerment Program, Class of 2018 at Safaricom Indoor Arena in Kasarani, Governor Sonko made light of the moment when he opened his speech.

Sonko was today careful to articulate the President’s name as ‘Kenyatta’ and not ‘Kenyarra’ as he tried during the Blue Economy Conference. His remarks on the issue left the crowd including the President in stitches.

“Your Excellency…The Blue Economy Conference is over, the international guests have gone back to their countries…So you are Uhuru Kenyatta not Kenyarra,” said Mike Sonko.

In a video that went viral on social media the Governor seemed to have been intimidated by the presence of the thousands of dignitaries from the around the world and bowed down to the pressure to speak like they did. Maybe he thought they wouldn’t understand his Kenyanese that has a lot of ghetto influence?

Not only did the Governor pronounce the President’s name as Kenyarra, but all other t’s in his vocabulary seemed to have been replaced by r’s.

In his defence, Sonko said that he wanted to impress guests from the international community and overseas countries and make them ‘feel at home’ when they attended the Blue Economy Conference at the KICC.

Nairobi Governor Sonko always has a way of making moments light and turning around those moments meant to humiliate to work for him rather than against him.

So do you think the Blue Economy internationals were impressed by Sonko’s accent?
