Sir Alex Furguson’s medical documents accessed illegally

An unnamed number of staff at a Greater Manchester hospital is being investigated over allegations of accessing Sir Alex Ferguson’s medical files illegally.

The legendary football manager was admitted to the hospital in May this year after suffering a brain haemorrhage at Salford Hospital and after The Times reported that d two doctors, a senior consultant and at least two nurses accessed Sir Alex’s records despite not being responsible for his care, investigations have commenced.

Several staff are under investigation “in relation to an information governance breach. We have apologised unreservedly to the patient and their family.” the hospital said.

Chief medical officer for the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group, which runs Salford Royal Dr Chris Brookes confirmed the internal investigation is underway to find the veracity of the reports.

“We can confirm that a number of staff who work at Salford Royal are currently subject to investigation in relation to an information governance breach. All of our patients have the right to expect that their information will be looked after securely and accessed appropriately. We take patient confidentiality extremely seriously … and will take the appropriate action to ensure staff understand the seriousness of unauthorised access,” Dr Brookes added.

Ferguson, 76, managed Manchester United for a trophy-laden period of 27 years, was admitted to the Salford Royal on May 5th and remained in intensive care prior to his discharge in June.
