Although Loftus-Cheek did not enter the fray until the 67th minute, he managed to bag himself the second goal after Pedro opened the scoring on four minutes to secure a vital win for the Blues.

It is a much-needed boost for Chelsea after their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham last weekend.

That performance attracted a lot of criticism for Sarri’s men but the Italian suggested too much was made of the result.

Chelsea recovered from their dismal defeat to Spurs last weekend

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface after the game, Sarri said: “I think we were talking about the Tottenham match too much. We played very badly but this was the first time we were beaten in three and a half months.

“Of course we needed to react and I think we played very well in the Europa League and we started well today. Then I was a very impressed with the application.

“Maybe we could have done better in the offensive phase of the game but I think we were a bit too tense at times.

“I think the result was very important for the team. The result was the only thing on the mind.”

On Loftus-Cheek, Sarri said: “I think he played very well in the Europa League and I was very happy with him because he played very well from the tactical point of view.

“It was not a problem for me to put him on from the bench, I was sure about his impact on the match.”
