Are witchcraft or black magic real?some people who are looking to the occult to get divine intervention and success in their dealings claims to be victims or beneficiaries of sorcery.

A month hardly passes before a bizarre case is reported in the media. Most of these cases involve theft, infidelity or a change of fortune.

Gangsters from various hoods in Nairobi are now said to be converging at a local witch doctor’s shrine to get cleansing and protection from being caught or killed by the police.

Recently the police linked witchcraft with the missing suspect in the murder of Monica Nyawira Kimani.

Officers said the suspect was believed to be holding vital evidence taken from Monica’s house, including some cash, the killer weapon, house and car keys, and clothes.

A team of detectives has been in Mombasa since Sunday amid claims the suspect could have gone to a witch doctor or two for “blessings”.

Sources in the team said they were pursuing good leads on the possible whereabouts of the mystery suspect in Mombasa.

Police said the suspect was believed to have been in the company of another suspect, Joseph Irungu, on the day Monica was killed.

According to the research ,”witchcraft”related violence has challenged state authority, this dissertation argues that crimes driven by “witchcraft” have consistently presented practical and epistemological impediments to the state’s efforts to construct order and administer justice in Kenya from the colonial-era to the present day.

Incorporating archival, oral, and published sources, this project demonstrates the historical ineffectiveness of law and policy in dealing with “witchcraft”-related violence.

Rather than searching for the “modernity” of “witchcraft,” this dissertation reveals how popular discourse has consistently employed “witchcraft” as a metaphor for and explanation of misfortune and how state discourse has continuously constructed “witchcraft” as a convenient category of-the-state, mobilized to explain away persistent disorder.
