The thirty students arrested in Bomet county over a beer and sex party on Friday night have finally been released from police custody. The students were yesterday freed on police bonds of Ksh. 1000 to Ksh. 1500 after spending a whole night in police cells at Bomet Police Station.

According to information from two of the students, the party which was a farewell after the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations was planned three months ago when schools reopened for the third term and was executed without the knowledge of their teachers, parents and the school administration.

“We held a series of meetings as a class and thought the best way to remember our secondary school days and say goodbye to each other was to hold a party outside the institution immediately after writing the last KCSE paper,” one said.

The students said that the food and drinks were sneaked into the home where the occasion took place through a passage in maize plantation, a tea plantation and a thicket. The students contributed Ksh. 200 each to cater for the food and drinks.

“Only 34 of us raised the money, which was a ticket to the event. Those who could not afford it kept off and went to join their families and relatives after the exams,” said another student.

However, Bomet County Divisional Police Commander Samson Rukunga denied reports that the 30 were students of Njerian Day Secondary School saying that they had arrested adults for being drunk and disorderly.

“What I know is that people were netted in a swoop at Chepngaina Village after reports that they were drunk and had been causing a disturbance in the area,” he said.

“I am not aware of the arrest of any students alongside suspects who will be arraigned on Monday.”

His reports contradict those from Bomet township location Chief Reuben Ng’etich who led the operation after being alerted by neighbours and said that the thirty were form four leavers.

“At a round 11:00 pm on Friday I was called by locals over students shouting and dancing and I alerted police and we conducted an operation where we arrested 30 underage boys and girls and who discovered were students who had completed their KCSE exams,” Ng’etich
