Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has raised the prospect of a possible extension to his stay on these shores and said that he potentially “could extend” his contract with the champions.

The former Barcelona coach spoke of his desire to manage a national team one day earlier this week, saying that he will take the reins of an international side “sooner or later”.

But speaking in his press conference ahead of the league-leaders’ game against West Ham United this afternoon, he seemed keen to stress his contentment at the Etihad.

“I have a contract here and I don’t deny [rule out] if things are going well that I could extend my contract here,” he said.

Guardiola also spoke about his squads’ fitness issues and revealed that the left-back Benjamin Mendy will be out for “10 to 12 weeks” as he recovers from injury.

The Frenchman underwent surgery on his left knee earlier this month, having suffered a meniscus problem.

Mendy posted pictures to his social media account of him in a hospital bed while under the care of Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, the same doctor who treated him for the ligament problem in the right knee that ruled him out of most of Manchester City’s title-winning season last term.

Cugat has proved an asset to the club since a relationship was developed between the two, managing to bring players back from injury problems ahead of schedule time and again, including Kevin De Bruyne, who suffered a knee problem in August.

The prognosis is comparatively positive for Bernardo Silva, who was sent home early from international duty with Portugal last week.

“He cannot play this weekend.” said his manager. “It’s not too big but this game and I don’t know if he will be able next Tuesday.”
