Malindi town was yesterday evening hit by misfortune in what police believe was an Al-Shabaab attack. The National Police Service today morning informed the public of the attack in a trading center in Chakama, Kilifi county.

“The National Police Service wishes to inform the public that last evening at about 8pm, a gang of men armed with AK 47 rifles attacked Chakama Trading centre in Chakama, Makongeni sub location in Kilifi county, about 80 kilometres west of Malindi town,” read the tweet from the official Kenya National Police Service Twitter account.

The gunmen, whom police described as “bandits”, raided the market in Makongeni Sub Location, about 80 kilometres west of Malindi town, on Tuesday at around 8pm injuring five people. Police reports say that an Italian woman was also kidnapped during the night attack.

The Italian woman aged 23 years was among Italian volunteers who had rented a house from which she was abducted at Chakama trading centre. She is said to have been working as volunteer with Africa Milele Onlus, a non-governmental organisation whose mission is to raise literacy and education levels in Chakama.

Residents of Chakama while recounting the events of last night said that 80 heavily armed men attacked the village in Galana Kulalu at around 8pm and started shooting in the air.

“They then kidnapped the young Italian lady, who works as a volunteer in the area,” said one of the local residents.

Police named the injured as:

(1) Samini Garama Dadu, aged 23 years was shot on the left side of the neck and is in serious condition.

(2) Ibrahim Said, aged 16 years was shot on the left knee and his condition is stable.

(3) Elias Mwaringa Kathua, aged 12 years was shot on the left thigh, his condition is stable.

(4) Mohamed Kalume Konde, aged 10 years was shot on the left eye, his condition stable.

(5) Mang Katana Jeffa, aged 20 years was shot on the right thigh, his condition stable.

According to police reports, most of the injured were children and young adults. Why would anyone want to harm innocent children?

Police said that all the injured persons were taken to hospital and contingents of police officers were deployed to track down the criminals. However, an anonymous source who witnessed the attack said that by the time police were deployed to the scene, the gunmen had already crossed River Galana.

“The lady could be heard calling for help as they took her across the river,” said the source.

Police have however assured the public that they would not spare any effort in tracking down the criminals adding that the victim would be rescued.

Although neither the reason for the attack nor the identity of the attackers has been established, police have appealed to members of the public in the area to promptly report to the nearest Police Officer or Police Station should they sight the criminals with the abducted lady.

The area of the attack, Galana Kulalu, is near Tana River and Garissa where Al-Shabaab elements roam.

Do you think there’s hope of the police tracking down the gunmen and rescuing the abducted Italian woman?
