No one is above the law!!Two legislatures arrested for violating “Michuki rules”

The on going “Michuki Rules” crackdown has saw thousands of lawbreakers behind bars not only ‘Mwananchi wa kawaida ‘even the lawmakers are not spared.

Two Members of County Assembly(MCAS) from Meru County were  arrested early this week for not complying with ‘Michuki Rules’.

The Two legislatures,  Antubetwe Kiongo MCA George Kaliunga and his Kianjai counterpart John Bundi, were found driving vehicles considered unroadworthy.

Bundi’s car was lacking rear brake light whereas Kaliunga drove with a broken windscreen.

Appearing before Meru Chief Magistrate Hannah Ndung’u, the two were charged with failing to maintain their own vehicles.

Kaliunga told the court that the cracked windscreen came about while he was driving on a road that was still under construction at the time.

He further elaborated that a stone hit his windscreen while a lorry drove ahead of him. He was pleading to be released.

Kaliunga was charged Ksh3,000 fine with an alternative of spending three months in prison whereas Bundi was fined Ksh2,000.

So far more than 22,000 road users had been netted since the crackdown on public service vehicles commenced with the lowest fine imposed according to the rules was Ksh500 for failure to fasten seat belts whereas that of driving a defective vehicles would amount to Kshs100,000 depending on defects.

The is expected to go higher after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) director-general Francis Meja, said the sleuths will join the authority, traffic police and other State agencies in sustaining the crackdown especially as the festive season sets in.

“All the agencies involved will step up surveillance, especially on major roads and blackspots, to ensure motorists adhere to safety rules. We will not relent,” said Meja.

The goal is to curb road carnage, as the latest statistics by the NTSA show that at least 2,214 people have died in road accidents since January.

This year alone, more than 2,214 people have died in road accidents since January,just last month, 58 people were killed in a horrific accident involving a bus in western Kenya.
