It’s devastating to think that you can be gathered in your significant place of worship with other faithfuls only for it to be an opportunity for malicious suicide bombers to attack. Why must so many people die because of the faith they profess?

Only today, a suicide bomber has targeted a gathering of Muslim religious scholars in Kabul, Afghanistan killing at least 40 people according to reports from Afghan officials. According to police, the blast occurred around 6:15 p.m. local time.

According to Public Health Ministry Spokesman Wahid Majroh, 60 others were also wounded in the inhumane attack. Interior Ministry Spokesperson Najib Danish confirmed that the bomber secretly entered a wedding hall in the Capital of Kabul where hundred of scholars and clerics had gathered to celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammud, an occasion marked by Muslims all around the world.

“The blast ripped through a venue near the city’s international airport, where a gathering of religious scholars was taking place,” the Afghan Interior Ministry said.

Although both the Taliban and a local Islamic State affiliate have targeted religious scholars aligned with the government in the past, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Both militant groups want to overthrow the US-backed government and impose a harsh form of Islamic rule, but they are bitterly divided over leadership and ideology. In the past year, the security in Kabul has deteriorated and has seen the Capital a victim of numerous terror attacks.

In August this year, at least 34 people were killed in an attack which targeted an education center. Among the victims were teenagers thought to be studying English.

Barely a month later, 20 other people, including two journalists, were killed in twin bomb attacks in a wrestling club for which ISIS claimed responsibility. The second blast was detonated after emergency services, journalists and police arrived at the scene.
In July, the UN released a report stating the number of Afghan civilians killed in the first six months of 2018 had reached a record high. Almost 1,700 civilians were killed from January 1 to June 30, a total higher than at any comparable time over the last 10 years.
