Too Much? Kenyan MPs to get rent-free houses, cars if new Bill is passed

Kenyan MPs to get free house, car if new Bill is passed

We all want a better life then the one we  are living currently ,but this is just too much. Members of the 12th Parliament could soon start receiving free cars, houses, revamped medical cover and fat travel allowances should they pass the Parliamentary Service Bill. The already highly remunerated 416 lawmakers, speakers and their deputies and even the majority leaders in the two Houses will roll in high-end cars and live in luxurious homes bought by the taxpayers. Isn’t what they are getting already enough?

The Bill, Daily Nation reported, was tabled by Baringo North MP William Cheptumo who is the chairperson of the National Assembly Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, which produced the report that informed drafting of the new Bill.

Besides the free houses and cars, the MPs, House speakers and their deputies and the majority leaders would enjoy improved mortgage facility, which currently staggers at KSh 20 million per legislator.

The Bill comes about two weeks after the MPs angrily protested the quality of catering services they were receiving in Parliament. The lawmakers claimed the quality of food they were being served when they visit the August House was poorly prepared. They demanded their catering services to be outsourced from a 5-star hotel where the food would be prepared by professional chefs only and people hired by the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).

While debating a report on Members’ Services and Facilities on November 7, the lawmakers, led by the National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, called for full implementation of the recommendations contained in the House report.

They said report had recommended for several changes including construction of two cafeterias, renovation of Parliament’s kitchen, bar and restaurant, and members’ lounge. Sources  understands the Committee, chaired by Nyaribari Masaba MP Ezekiel Machogu, tabled the report following a bench-marking exercise in the United Kingdom (UK) and Northern Ireland National Assemblies.
