The stadium has a capacity of 40,000 people and was full to the brim during the recently held Mashujaa Day in the county withh all the terraces filled up. This forced other people to just stand in an effort to witness the greatest event that is happening for the first time ever in Kakamega County.
Speaking during the event, Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya revealed that the county government is working to upgrade Bukhungu Stadium to an international Stadium.
“By the year 2020, the Bukhungu Stadium will meet the international benchmarks and we will rebrand it to Bukhungu International Stadium,” said Oparanya.
This has been termed as a bench marking moment for many counties which have not even allocated cash for any sporting activities leave along have a stadium. This also means that devolution can work perfectly as previously envisioned.
