The Arsenal trio Jurgen Klopp passed on at Liverpool – and how he has been proved right

As Liverpool prepare for arguably their stiffest defensive test so far on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp will know exactly how damaging Arsenal can be.

While Chelsea and Manchester City are undeniably fantastic going forward, no other team has created chaos up front as much as Unai Emery’s side.

With 24 goals, they are the joint second top goalscorers in the division; and whereas leaders City (with 27) offer a more controlled route to goal, Arsenal instead offer a gung ho approach which has seen them score three or more seven times already this season.

Central to that is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a player who worked with Klopp for two seasons. Though he would not necessarily reach the goalscoring feats of his latter Borussia Dortmund days, he would notch 29 goals in 65 Bundesliga appearances, a hat trick on his debut included.

When Klopp arrived at Anfield in 2015, there was clamour for him to bring some of his former stars with him to Merseyside. Aubameyang was not initially one of them.

But his explosion of form in Germany soon had a number of supporters demanding the Gabon international was targeted as the man to bring more goals to Liverpool.

Nor did he show any interest towards Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was available from Dortmund in the summer of 2016. Eyebrows were raised when the German boss opted for Sadio Mane, allowing his former playmaker to move to Manchester United.

Now at Arsenal and still trying to recapture his Dortmund form, it is a decision the past two years has vindicated.

Both Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan will be tasked with ending Liverpool’s unbeaten Premier League run – though the Armenian may do so from the bench – and it was in 2016 when Klopp explained ultimately why they will line up for the home side at the weekend.

This does not always stand up to scrutiny, of course. That same summer, Klopp tried to reunite with Mario Gotze, who ended up leaving Bayern Munich to return to Dortmund.

Talks were held with the Germany international but with the Reds unable to offer Champions League football, Gotze wouldn’t commit and wanted to keep his options open until after Euro 2016.
