Keeping his enemies close? Ruto hosts Uhuru and Raila for Lunch at his Karen House

Deputy President William Ruto hosted President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga for lunch at his Karen home in a move that analysts have described as keeping his enemies close.

Pictures shared on Social Media showed the two leaders at Ruto’s palatial castle in Karen. The three had earlier  in the day attended a Requiem Mass for the late Jane Kiano at ACK St. Francis, Karen.

The meeting comes amid rising tension over the 2022 succession politics and the recent calls for a referendum to change the constitution.

At Kiano’s requiem mass, Raila said that President Uhuru Kenyatta and himself are not products of political dynasties as it has always been claimed by some quarters.

Raila said that their rise to political superiority was borne out of sheer hard work, patience, and determination; contrary to common belief that they had it easy courtesy of their fathers’ political influence.

“Jomo Kenyatta was a son of a pauper. He struggled [and] was detained by the colonialists for all those years. Because of that, you cannot say Uhuru is part of a dynasty.”

In August this year, Ruto claimed that he is being fought by some people who want to brand him as corrupt because they think he should not own anything just because he is a son of a peasant.

“Those running ‘injili ya shetani’ that unless your father was a minister, a vice president or a president however hard you work you must remain poor and if not a pauper you must be corrupt & have stolen, they should know that those without god fathers we have GOD the father. Shindwe,” Ruto posted on Twitter after he was ranked as the most corrupt Kenyan by IPSOS Synovate.

Ruto has set his eyes for presidency in 2022 but his allies believe that the only stumbling block between him and the House on the hill is Raila Odinga.

Some of his supporters believe Raila and Uhuru want to change the constitution through a referendum to create a Prime Minister’s post. In the theory, Uhuru will become Prime Minister as Raila becomes President.

President Uhuru has however said that he doesn’t plan on clinging in power and he will retire in 2022. Raila was recently appointed as an AU envoy, a position that some people suggest has elevated him from national politics.

Do you think Welcoming Raila and Uhuru to his home can help Ruto become President?
