Sheep at Day, Wolves At Night: How Mt.Kenya MPs are Playing Games With Ruto

Central Kenya MPs are again on the spotlight and this time, it is the outspoken Bahati MP Ngunjiri Kimani that has fired shots at his compatriots asking them to take one stand on the 2022 succession politics. The Mps have of late been on a ranting spree. The Members of Parliament from the Mount Kenya region actually look like a confused lot with claims that they are apparently divided on who to support come 2022. Some sections have pledged support for deputy president William Ruto while the other lot want to go with a new candidate all together.

Claims have emerged of how the leaders worship the deputy president when at his functions but craft shoddy deals behind his back. Some of these deals being crafted are actually aimed at jeopardizing his ascension to the country’s top most seat.

Various leaders from the region have weighed in on the matter. In fact, over 70 MPs from the region converged for a meeting last week to discuss the 2022 succession politics with nominated senator Isaac Mwaura saying that the Mount Kenya region will not accept any deal aimed at frustrating it’s people. The question many of us are asking is what are the components of a favourable deal according to the Mount Kenya MPs? Well, only them can answer this but i think with the ever increasing political temperatures in the country, we shall soon find out.

Bahati MP Ngunjiri Kimani has challenged his colleagues from Mt Kenya to publicly declare their support for Deputy President William Ruto for president in 2022.

Ngujiri said the MPs were hypocritical on their support Ruto.

“In the presence of Ruto, they claim to be his staunch defenders but in his absence they avoid talk of his presidency. They should stop this hypocrisy and stick to one position,” Ngunjiri.

Mt Kenya MPs on Monday met in Naivasha over President Uhuru Kenyatta’s political future. Ngunjiri said they avoided talk of Ruto succeeding Uhuru.

The more than 70 MPs instead talked about development in the region. They said the government has sidelined MT Kenya.

Ngunjiri said Rift Valley has already settled on Ruto as their candidate in the 2022 presidential race. He told Mt Kenya MPs to let Uhuru retire when his final term ends.

“Uhuru has publicly stated he will be retiring from politics after the end of his term. Mt Kenya leaders should not arm twist him to push for a third term in office,” Ngunjiri said.

Mount Kenya region has been sending mixed signals on their support for Deputy President William Ruto who was initially seen as Uhuru’s automatic choice of successor. Ruto no longer looks like the region’s obvious choice.

With palpable excitement and jitters as well, two factions have emerged in the larger Mt Kenya region with one backing Ruto as Uhuru’s heir apparent while another is of the view that the vote-rich bloc should forge new alliances outside Ruto.

“As you are aware the region is not currently speaking with one voice. There are those who wanted us to discuss who will succeed President Uhuru in 2022 both for presidency and the regional level,” said an Mp who sought anonymity.
