A bait caught two men who could not handle their responsibility during the exam period and landed them in jail to evaluate their ignorance.

The two exam centre managers in Meru were arrested on today for going to work while drunk and failing to collect examination papers on time. However Meru County Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga said the two KCPE centre managers were immediately substituted to ensure the examinations continued as planned.

Ms Mohamed said at the Kenya School of Government during a brief on the examinations after identifying several examination cartels before the exam started that, “So far, we have placed 30 examination centres under high dependency surveillance and 192 under amplified surveillance based on reported examination malpractice trends from 2015 to 2017,”

“All examination containers will not be opened until the stipulated time, which is 5.30 am. No centre should start distributing examination papers before the stipulated starting time.

“I will lead other senior government officials in the monitoring exercise to witness the opening of containers at the crack of dawn and to supervise examination distribution and management.”

She said the containers will have a double locking system and only sub-county directors of education and deputy county commissioners will have the keys. Clearly the two managers did not listen to any of these instructions.

In Igembe Central, a centre manager was reported to have failed to turn up at the sub-county headquarters to collect the papers forcing officials to deliver the exams to Karama Antuamuo Primary School.

“The centre managers are contracted by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to ensure the exams are done. Any attempt to sabotage the examinations will not be entertained. Students have prepared for the exams for many years and all officers must take this exercise seriously,” Mr Nyagwanga said.

He said the team overseeing the national exams is on high alert to avert irregularities.

The 2018 examination administration road map  showed that examination booklets would be dispatched to schools early to ease verification of the materials ahead of the scheduled dates. The details are contained in a brief by acting Knec Chief Executive Officer Mercy Karogo.

The document reveals that Sub-County directors of education will receive the examination materials and issue them to centre managers, supervisors and invigilators to avoid last minute confusion.

Security officials were also given keys to the metallic containers ahead of the tests for smooth flow.

Do you think the managers deserved the arrest or it was an exaggeration?
