In the wee hours of Sunday morning, when the country was sleeping, police managed to shoot down three six gangsters in Nairobi’s Dandora slums.

The gang had earlier on attacked a boda boda rider with his female passenger. They raped the passenger severally before stealing the motorbike with other valuables from the two among them mobile phones, a handbag and some cash.

Unknown to the gangsters, the motorbike had a tracking device on it. Police tracked it to Dandora, where a shooting ensued. At the end all the six were killed and the stolen items recovered.

Another incident is that of the fatal road accident involving Migori Woman Rep Pamela Odhiambo in Migori on Sunday. Her bodyguard Fred Owich died on the spot while the politician sustained serious spinal code injuries that could leave her using a wheelchair forever.

The above two incidences point to the dangers posed by the Boda Boda menace in the country at the moment.

They are a security risk to both the rider and the passenger. They are also the number one cause of accidents on our roads.

According to police, Boda bodas are currently ranked number three on the list of threats to national security. This is slightly lower than terrorism.

According to the police, boda bodas are now involved in every form of crime in the country, ranging from drug, arms and human trafficking, robbery with violence, murder and traffic offences.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti says boda boda riders are are on the police watch list. “If you go to the borders, they are used for surveillance by criminals, sneaking in arms and for getaways. In urban areas they are used in trafficking drugs and contraband. They are a danger at large,” said Mr Kinoti.

Police say the riders’ numbers can be overwhelming, so much so that every time a boda boda operator is involved in an accident, fellow riders gang against the other party.

“They usually join hands in harassing the other party involved in an accident. We have had incidents where they even killed three motorists in the city,” said Nairobi police boss Joseph Ole Tito.

These are worrying revelations that if not curbed may lead to more fatal outcomes. Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko recently banned Bodas from the CBD but still a lot needs to be done to curb the menace.
