Possible replacements for Chelsea flop

When Maurizio Sarri replaced Antonio Conte in July, few would have predicted the instant impact he would have at Stamford Bridge.

Sarri himself said it would take time for his troops to adapt to the new “Sarri-ball” style of play, however we’re now in the darker days of October and he’s yet to lose a single game, having overseen a 12-match unbeaten league and cup run, which includes nine wins.

Star man Eden Hazard is firing, new boy Jorginho is a pass master in the centre of midfield, and undefeated Chelsea have accumulated 21 points from their opening nine Premier League games.

The difference between Chelsea going on to win the title, and falling short, could be a high-quality striker. Olivier Giroud has yet to score in the league, while flop Alvaro Morata only has two goals to his name, and with the latter widely expected to be sold in January, here’s three strikers that Chelsea have to target.

Mauro Icardi

The striker who was bizarrely left out of Argentina’s World Cup squad has been one of Europe’s stand-out goalscorers over the last couple of seasons.

Mauro Icardi bagged 26 goals in 41 games in 2016/17, and 29 goals in 36 matches last season, while he has six strikes to his name so far this term, including a last-gasp winner in Sunday’s Milan Derby – see video.

The Inter Milan captain has long been linked with a move to England,, and with Sarri now at the helm of Chelsea working his magic the Blues should be doing everything they can to lure the Argentine over to Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old’s incredible eye for goal, deceptive movement, and intelligence in the box would be a welcome presence in Chelsea’s frontline. The capital club would have to break the bank to sign him, but should the lethal marksman swiftly adapt to life in England, there’s every chance he can set the Premier League alight.

Krzysztof Piatek

A few months ago you’d have been forgiven for not knowing who on earth Krzysztof Piatek was, but spring forward to the current day and Europe’s most prolific striker has propelled his name on everyone’s radar.

Since switching Cracovia for Genoa in the summer, the 23-year-old sharpshooter has been in scorching form, bagging 13 goals in just nine games for his new employers, while he’s also announced himself on the international stage after scoring in his second appearance for Poland.

Admittedly a move in January would be considered a gamble, considering Piatek would only have spent five months of his career playing in a top league, however if he continues his electric form then it could prove to be a punt worth taking.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Why not?

The iconic Swede has proved his playing career is far from over, having hammered home 22 goals in 26 games for LA Galaxy. The MLS season comes to a close before the year is out, meaning Zlatan could be open for a cheeky loan move in the New Year.

Zlatan being Zlatan would no doubt be tempted by one last scintillating spell in Europe, and he’s already been linked with both a return to Man Utd, and a move to Real Madrid, but should Chelsea still be a promising presence in the title race come January a shock transfer could well be on the cards.

Ibrahimovic has won league titles in Spain, Italy and France, but while he helped lead United to a treble (of sorts) the Red Devils flopped in the league, and his hunger to lift that Premier League means Chelsea would represent an attractive option, while his own presence, experience and ability to conjure something special out of absolutely nothing make him a valuable asset to have, even at 37.
