From a Muthurwa Thug Look a Like to City Hall Boss: See Sonko’s Humble Days

Mike Mbuvi Sonko or Mike Sonko might be the current governor of Nairobi City but behind his success is a story of patience and well calculated moves.

The City boss was born in Mombasa where he was later raised and educated. There, his father ran a property and real estate agency, Pelly Properties, which he co-owned with another businessman.

Mike Sonko was born on February 27 1975. Sonko spent his early years in crime, from mugging people in the streets of Mombasa to. He is a notorious jail breaker, having escaped from Shimo La Tewa Prison under unclear circumstances. His thuggish, often garish mode of dressing only reinforced this image of a gangster before becoming Nairobi Senator enroute to being governor.

After completing primary school at Kikowani Primary School in Mombasa, Sonko started getting more involved in his father’s business. At the time he was a student at Kwale High School, Kwale County. “My father was a developer and used to sell beach plots at the Coast to European buyers. He made good profits because he bought the plots cheaply,” Sonko once told a local daily. He said he made Sh5 million working for his father when he was in Form Four in Kwale High in 1991. Despite qualifying to go to university, he decided business was his calling. Instead, he took a course in Business Administration and Management at Excel International School in Mwanza and Pwani Business College.

Before Mike Sonko joined parliament, he used to operate a fleet of matatus in Eastlands. How he got the capital to start this venture is anybody’s guess. He also used to engage in various shady deals.

He now has a great family together with his wife Primrose Mbuvi with whom they seem to have come a long way with and a good run in the political sphere.

Sonko’s leadership style has been termed as erratic and unorthodox leadership with the governor seemingly sacking people left, right and center.

County Secretary Peter Kariuki, acting Health executive Vesca Kangogo, County Attorney Lydia Kwamboka and Health Chief Officer Mahat Jimale were the latest victims of the governor’s scattergun approach.

The four were sent home for allegedly contradicting the governor over the happenings at Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

But even as critics opine that ‘the King is slowly becoming naked’, Governor Sonko has vowed to continue with his style, saying that he has no apologies over his leadership style, adding that “I will go the ruthless way as Evans Kidero tried the corporate way and failed.”

“It is working and it is going to work. Nairobi needs controversial and fearless leaders not corporates. I will not entertain cartels and the corrupt in my administration. People have to understand me. That is my way of leadership. I deal with cartels ruthlessly,” said Governor Sonko.
