Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet might have wanted to save his job by distancing the police from the Wednesday October 10, 2018 Fort Ternan bus crash in Kericho County.

On Thursday Boinnet said the police were not to blame for the Fort Ternan bus accident that left 58 people dead.

The lawmakers demanded that he resigns for sleeping on the job. They heard that the police did not inspect the Kakamega-bound bus christened Home Boyz, despite the long distance it had to cover.

Boinnet however admitted it reached Fort Ternan without being flagged for a routine check.

He said they will soon roll out stringent measures to punish drivers, vehicle owners and insurance firms found flouting traffic rules.

“We’re working well with the NTSA to come up with stringent measures, which put greater responsibility on drivers, vehicle owners and insurance firms,” Boinnet told the National Assembly Transport committee.

However, his statement did not content the law makers at all.

“It’s shocking the Inspector General could tell Kenyans that they are doing a good job. We can’t lose 58 lives then you tell us you are doing your best. You should take responsibility,” Kajiado North MP Peris Tobiko said.

Nyatike MP Tom Odege questioned why the police chief is yet to take action against officers who were on duty but failed to impound the vehicle. Boinnet said culprits will be held to account.

Political leaders from western Kenya used on Wednesday last week held a requiem mass for the 31 souls from Kakamega County that perished in the Fort Ternan crash.

The leaders who had joined hundreds of mourners at Amalemba grounds in Kakamega used the requiem mass to demand compensation for the families of the perished 58.

They also asked the government to launch a commission of inquiry into the accident.

Senator Malala called for the Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet to take responsibility for the accident.

Kericho County Governor Chepkwony also joined the politicians in demanding that the accident be declared a national disaster.
