The reign of floods in Mombasa not funny at all

The residents of Mombasa have expressed their disappointment in the county after a heavy down pour leading  to floods has been associated with a drainage problem. A situation that has remained the same since 2013 despite funds being allocated to roadworks.

The heavy rains, which started on Wednesday night, have caused flooding and poor visibility on the roads.  Motorists are said to have struggled to steer vehicles through the flooded roads on Thursday morning with some residents having to wade through flooded sections of the roads.

At the ferry, there was a traffic snarl-up as motorists steered their cars through the waters. It was so bad that some pedestrians remained stranded at the ferry waiting bay as they waited for the rains to subside.

 Mombasa residents have expressed outrage at the situation saying they are tired of promises by the county government to sort the drainage problem as motorists grappled with flooded streets following heavy rains in the region.

On Tuesday however, the weatherman warned residents of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu of possible flash floods for three days.

“Heavy rainfall of more than 30mm in 24 hours expected on Wednesday. The rainfall is expected to intensify to more than 40mm in 24 hours on Thursday along the South Coast,” read the advisory issued by the department.

Even though Sh 277 million was allocated in the 2018-19 Fiscal Year’s budget for roads and infrastructure development,Matatu Owners Association Coast coordinator Salim Mbarak has revealed that stakeholders have for long engaged the county to improve the drainage but the effort put on the works is not enough.

He lamented on the costly damages Matatus have suffered mentioning that they have spent over Sh 100,000 in repairs.

Those who braved the pounding rains got to work wet. Floodwaters filled major streets and avenues in the city.

Residents of Kaa Chonjo in Tudor woke up to blocked sewages and flooded houses following the heavy rains.Men rushed to unblock the biggest sewer in the area that drains into the ocean, while women and children used anything to scoop water from their houses.

“Almost all my electric appliances have been destroyed. My clothes are soaked up and it’s still raining,” said Mr Nyang’au a resident.

The County director of communication Richard Chacha said Hassan Joho’s administration will respond to the residents’ cries.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had warned of heavy downpour of more than 30 mm in 24 hours on Wednesday .They said “heavy rains are expected in the whole of Coast region and the rains will be accompanied by strong winds and large waves affecting Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties.”

On Friday, the rains are expected to intensity. Residents in the mentioned counties have also been advised to be on the lookout for flash floods.

“People should avoid driving, wading or walking through any fast moving waters. The heavy rains and strong winds offshore may result in storm surge along the Coast hence fishermen and all in the marine industry should be on high alert,” warned the weatherman.
