How the court has ‘betrayed’ Sharon Otieno’s family

While Governor Okoth Obado and the people of Migori County celebrate the release of their county leader, one family of the slain Migori University student is now in tears.

Migori Governor Okoth Obado appeared in court today before High Court Judge Jessie Lessit who ruled that the Governor be freed on a Ksh. 5 million bail.

However, it’s a dark day at Melida Auma’s homestead. The mother of Sharon Otieno had earlier appealed to the court not to grant the governor and his counterparts bail.

In her affidavit opposing Governor Okoth Obado’s application for bail, Melida Auma recounted her daughter’s last moments before she was abducted and killed, her affair with Mr Obado, and threats against her family.

““We live in fear following the murder of Sharon. The thought that those accused of killing her can be free during trial is chilling, a situation not helped by the fact that as a family we are possible witnesses in the case,” said the mother of the late Sharon.

The family of the slain Migori University student will now be forced to live in fear because according to them, the Governor is an influential person and is likely to interfere with witnesses and put the family in danger.

The two other suspects, Obado’s PA Michael Oyamo and Migori county clerk Caspal Obiero were however denied bail.

The High Court judge also ordered Governor Obado not to miss any court session saying that the court had the liberty to cancel the bail at any time. Judge Lessit also warned the governor against discussing the case and intimidating the family of Sharon Otieno.

Additionally, the Court ordered the Migori Governor to surrender his passport and asked him to stay not further than 20 kilometers from his county, Migori.
