Marsabit MPs released on bail

The three MPs  who were arrested by detectives on Monday over the recent deadly clashes that rocked Marsabit County have now been released on bail. North Horr Member of Parliament Chachu Ganya and his counterparts Saku and Ali Rasso were on Tuesday arraigned in court and charged with inciting violence in Marsabit County leading to the deaths of at least 14 people.

The three MPs who appeared before Nairobi Senior Principal Magistrate, Kennedy Cheruiyot denied the charges and were released on a cash bail of Ksh. 250,000 or one million Kenya shillings bond. The court declined the prosecution’s request to detain the MPs for twenty one days saying that there was no proof the accused would interfere with the investigation.

“I have considered the submissions before court and there was no proof that they (accused) will interfere with prosecution witnesses,” said the magistrate.

“The accused are involved in reconciliation, I have seen the pictures… There are no compelling reasons to deny them bail,” he added.

The magistrate said that the two had been released on bail to continue with the reconciliation process between the two warring communities in Marsabit and directed them to report to the DCI every week.

However, the Eastern region DCI boss said the leaders were adversely mentioned as being behind the skirmishes.
