KURA’s huge plan for Nairobi roads details

Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has decided to desert minor repairs on roads in Nairobi in favour of a total re-carpeting plan.

John Cheboi, who is the KURA communication officer, stated that the strategy was affordable compared to the constant repairs made on the roads that have constantly stretched the budget allocated for maintenance.

“By re-carpeting and improving the drainages, we will have saved the costs of constant maintenance and even get the opportunity to assign a company to maintain the road at a lower fee since it is already in good shape.

“This year we have Ksh 2.7 billion set aside for this exercise with both the county government and the national government set to chip in to boost these efforts,” stated Cheboi

Private firms contracted by the body will be accorded full authority over the maintenance of the roads as part of the plan.

The preservation of the roads will be done at a yearly fee under the performance-based contracts.

The system has targeted about 400 km of the roads in the city with 15 km of it already under construction in Nairobi’s Eastlands area as reported by Nairobi News.

Contracts for Faidi Limited and Bashku General Supplies, who were responsible for Western ring roads, the Northern and Eastern Bypasses have since expired.

KURA has since re-advertised for new firms in order to maintain the condition of the roads.

This comes after the directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta in May, for the roads authority to join forces with the County Government of Nairobi to improve the deteriorating roads in the city, as part of the Nairobi Roads Regeneration Programme, which is set to last five years.
