Simba coach manager summoned over plastic bags consignment

Police in Mombasa have summoned the manager of Simba coach bus company over a plastic bag shipment that was seized when being offloaded from one of their buses in Mwembe Tayari area on Friday.

The 1.7-tonne shipment which contained approximately 1 million pieces of assorted plastic bags is suspected to have been sneaked into the country from Tanzania as the bus had just arrived from Dar es Salaam.

According to the Regional Director of the National Management Authority Stephen Wambua who spoke to journalists on Monday, the bus company would be held liable should the owner of the bags who evaded a police dragnet fail to show up.

“We have so far not arrested anyone in connection over the incident; however we have summoned the manager of the bus company to assist us in investigations that will lead arrest of the owner,” Wambua said.

The store manager at the bus company has so far been arrested over the incident.

The authority says it suspects that the bus company could have colluded with the owner of the shipment as no one showed up at the bus offices to claim the shipment for over 6 hours since the shipment was offloaded.

It is not yet clear how the shipment was able to pass through at the Lunga Lunga border control post without being detected however Wambua told journalists that the shipment had been concealed in woven bags.

This comes to a return in use of plastic bags in several neighborhoods in Mombasa.

A spot check by Baraka FM in Likoni area showed the prevalent use of secondary packaging plastic bags by retailers.
