“I humble myself because I won this race. It is a great achievement to me… I must congratulate myself and thank God for the help and the gift if talent that He has given me. Now I am happy,” Cherono said.

Tadelech Bekele of Ethiopia also successfully defended her title, winning the women’s marathon in 2:23:07. Shasho Insemu and Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia came in second and third place, with time of 2:23:13 and 2:23:31 respectively.

Multiple world and Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele did not finish despite a good start. He dropped out of the race barely one kilometer to the finish line possibly due to an injury. Kenenisa was touted as a possibility to challenge Eliud Kipchoge’s 2:01:39 world record set in Berlin last month.

Kenyans including the Deputy President, William Ruto have come out to congratulate Lawrence Cherono for his great win.

Cherono said that weather was good and the wind slow so they had to run faster than they did last year adding that he hopes to be back next year for the marathon.
