Sonko vows to work closely with Passaris

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again declared that he won’t relent in the war against corruption in the capital Nairobi even if it means losing most of County Executive Members.

Speaking on Saturday during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Pumwani Grounds in Kamukunji Constituency, the Governor said he wants to leave a positive legacy together with President Uhuru Kenyatta, since the Jubilee Government has also promised to intensify the war on graft.

“Even if I remain with one CEC, I have no problem with that as long as I fight corruption. I’ll continue with my style of leadership. Some people are saying that all am doing is to sack county officials, l want to emphasize that l will do that over and over again if that is what it will take to end corruption,” said the governor, while addressing thousands who turned up for the celebration.

Meanwhile, the Governor has announced that the Urban Renewal Project under the Nairobi Regeneration Programme will be officially launched next month.

He said the project will compliment President Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda by offering affordable housing to Nairobi residents.

Sonko said the project will commence in Pangani Estate and he assured the residents that they will be compensated for the period they will be out of their houses to pave way for construction of high rise and modern houses.

The governor further said that the new houses will not attract new rental charges.

“We will compensate all those who will be affected, and once we are through we will give them priority in allocation of houses whose rental charges will remain the same,” he said.

The Urban Renewal Project targets to put up 200,000 affordable housing units in earmarked old estates in Nairobi.

The project will officially be launched next month by President Kenyatta.

The ceremony was attended by Nairobi County Commissioner Amos Mariba, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris, Nairobi MCAs, County CEC members and other top County officials.

Passaris said she’s ready to work with Governor Sonko despite their political affiliation.

She supported Sonko’s move to suspend demolition of kiosks and houses in informal settlements saying the order from the Governor will benefit the common mwananchi.

“I want to declare that I’m ready to work with Sonko for the benefit of Nairobi residents. I have seen what you have done with our ECDE centres and the provision of free milk to nursery children. This is a tremendous development,” said Passaris.

The Woman Representative further appealed to the governor to be included her in the plans to transform Pumwani Maternity Hospital, a move which was fully endorsed by the county chief.

“Next time you are making an impromptu visit to Pumwani Hospital please don’t leave me behind. I’m ready to be part and parcel of the change that you are planning to bring at Pumwani Hospital,” she added.

Governor Sonko said that he has no problem working with all the elected leaders in Nairobi as long as all efforts are geared towards development.

“I want to assure Passaris that we are going to work together to help achieve our development agenda,” Sonko said.
