Top 3 Players in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers So Far

Michael Olunga played an influential part in Kenya’s unlikely victory over Ghana during the last international break, and has continued his fine form again. He featured in the Harambee Stars’ 0-0 draw away in Ethiopia, and then netted in the East Africans’ 3-0 victory over the Walias in front of their own fans on Sunday. The forward has been key to giving Sebastien Migne’s side a cutting edge, although Eric Omondi also deserves credit for what was a sensational display in the Kasarani showdown.

Odion Ighalo: Few—if any—Nigeria players have been as criticised as Ighalo in recent months, with some fans not seeing what he offers the Super Eagles, and others writing him off after that infamous miss against Argentina during the World Cup. However, after netting against the Seychelles last month, Ighalo finally got himself back in the good graces with a hat-trick as Libya were dispatched emphatically in Uyo at the weekend. The 29-year-old didn’t deliver a flawless display, but he at least won over a swathe of doubters and must build on this display.

Emmanuel Okwi has been the hero for Uganda before, notably when the Cranes secured a shock victory over Egypt during their World Cup qualifying campaign. However, while the East Africans ultimately missed out on Russia 2018, his contribution to the ongoing AFCON campaign could well see them represent the region in Cameroon. The forward was positioned in a wider role on the right as Lesotho were dispatched 3-0 on Saturday, yet he still netted twice during an excellent display as Uganda moved to top spot in Group L.
