Constitution Amendment Bill 2018- Does Uhuru Gets Extension Of His Tenure.

The Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill 2018, sponsored by Ford Kenya MP Chris Wamalwa(Kiminini), will push the 2022 election date from August to December, if approved.

This means that the bill will, therefore, give President Uhuru Kenyatta a four-month extension of his tenure.

Wamalwa has argued that the current election date affects the country’s school calendar. Last year’s election caused a postponement of the national exams.

On Wednesday, legislators will vote on the bill which will require at least 233 votes to pass.

If approved by the MPs, it will be taken to the Senate for debate and voting. The Speakers of the two Houses will then jointly take it to President Uhuru for assent.

Wamalwa has expressed confidence that his bill will sail through the House easily, stating that 250 lawmakers have already given a commitment to support it.

The proposed law is likely to produce divergent opinions and MPs are expected to vote either electronically or through a roll call.

Uhuru will, however, have the last say as to whether the country should go through a referendum or not.

His assent will kick-start the process because according to the constitution, any bill that affects the President’s term of office shall be subject to public vote.

The President’s term is already shorter by a month because he was sworn in on November 28.

The move comes at a time when there is a push by Opposition Leader Raila Odinga to revise the law of the land through a referendum.
