Sports enthusiasts demand better pay Harambee Stars coach and players

Kenyans have today demanded that the Sports Ministry should address the claims that the Harambee star players are not well paid ad that their coach has not been paid for months now. This comes after the announcement of free entry and transport into the Kasarani stadium on Sunday during the match between Kenya and Ethiopia. A section of Kenyans had expressed their disappointment saying that making the entry free is an insult to the Kenyan team.

This reaction  from Kenyans was triggered by Nairobi County Governor; Mike Sonko’s announcement of free transport for Harambee Stars fans to Kasarani  on Sunday for those who will want to watch the match between Kenya and Ethiopia. The governor has given 150 buses that will be used for transport on that day. This is in a bid to support the sports culture in Kenya and allow Kenyans to cheer for their team during the match.

Earlier last week, Kenyan sports enthusiast took to social media to shame the leaders in the sports ministry with the claim of negligence and lack of concern to sport related activities. This was  not the first time that complaints have been raised for the same. Kenyans are bothered by the fact that during the 2018 Russia World cup, MP’s were alleged to have used taxpayers money in the name of benchmarking for a trip to Russia.

As reported by Citizen digital, Close to 30 politicians traveled Russia for the World Cup tournament, despite Kenya having never qualified for the competition. The trip has sparked outrage among many Kenyans who feel aggrieved that their tax money is going to waste. In their defense, the travelling Members of Parliament are insisting the matter has been blown out of proportion saying that the time in Russia has been well spent.

The cabinet secretary for sports Rashid Echesa was quick to distance himself from the trip and its purpose saying that the legislators’ trip was paid for by parliament.

“ We are aware that the National Assembly sports committee members are in Russia on a World Cup bench-marking tour. That is fully catered for by the parliamentary sports committee budget that is not hinged to the ministry of sports and heritage,” said CS Echesa.

Although some Kenyans have expressed excitement ahead of the Sunday match, some fear that it might not be a good idea. Some have requested that the security should be beefed up to avoid any mishaps.
