Man Utd ‘don’t need Zidane’! Woodward should appoint shock candidate to replace Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is under pressure and could lose his job this week after talks with Ed Woodward in the coming hours. Zidane is the hot favourite to take over but Christophers reckons the club should look closer to home.

And she’s backed Bournemouth boss Howe to return the style and identity to Manchester United.

“United don’t need Zidane, they need to be braver than that,” she wrote in her column for the Sun.

“Their fans call for major change, so why not put their money where their mouth is and go for Howe.

“Accept that it may take a little time for it all to come to fruition but Howe is highly regarded by those who played under him.”

Mourinho appeared to gain a lifeline last weekend when United came from behind to beat Newcastle in dramatic fashion.

But the axe is still hovering over Mourinho’s head and could be swooped before they play Chelsea after the international break.

But Christophers thinks a Zidane appointment would be another shower term fix and the club should be looking bigger picture.

“It’s all well and good getting Mourinho out, Ed Woodward out, Pogba out, the Glaziers out and Zinedine Zidane in,” she added. “But have they thought this through?

“Even if it is highly entertaining for us neutrals!

“Common complaints are of Mourinho embarrassing the club, his demeanour suggesting he doesn’t want to be at Old Trafford and his style of football.

“But Why Zidane? Will he keep to United traditions? Will he not demand further millions to put things right?

“Will he not be another short-term fix, gone in three years?

“What then? Manchester United fans don’t know what they want.

“They turned on David Moyes, were bored under Louis van Gaal and have now given up on Mourinho.”

Howe’s Bournemouth have started the season and well and sit sixth, three places and three points ahead of United.

And Christophers believes his age and coaching philosophy would make him the perfect appointment alongside a new director of football.

“Then why is no one calling for the best English manager available, the man who is sitting three places above the Red Devils in the league table – Eddie Howe?,” she asked.

“Okay, at 40 he is still young, but he has more than 450 games of experience in all four divisions of English football.

“It can be argued that if there is a flaw in his management it is in the area of recruitment.

“His appointment would be the ideal time to appoint a director of football, which fits the head coach/sporting director model that many United fans have been calling for.”

Manchester United, despite their 3-2 win over Newcastle on Saturday, are a club in crisis.

Long gone are the days where the club would repeatedly challenge for the Premier League title. While there was once Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill, there is now just Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward.

And this Manchester United double act isn’t working. It’s more Jekyll and Hyde than Bonnie and Clyde.

Today will now be key to the future of Mourinho. Newcastle provided respite but that, it seems, may be it.

Woodward is stalling on the axe. Reports leaked on Friday claiming Jose Mourinho’s head would roll regardless of the result against Newcastle.

Zinedine Zidane, out of work since leaving Real Madrid, is Woodward’s No 1 choice to come in.

However, it seems it’s rather tricky to sack a manager where fans sing his name with such vigour. Or one who oversaw a 3-2 victory as thrilling as it was erratic.

Mourinho and Woodward sit down for showdown talks today. And the worst case scenario would see the club looking for another new manager.

Mourinho wants to stay. He has always insisted that, despite his sulky demeanour, he has the stomach for the fight.

But he wants demands met.
