“I was scared of going blind in one eye and not being able to see again. Thank God nothing like that happened and it gradually improved day after day.

“Of course, I’ve been taking my medication and looking after it. Your eyes are very important as a professional footballer.

“Thank God everything is OK now. I was frightened, but the pain gradually passed after the doctor gave me a painkiller and it got better. “When the incident happened, everything was blurry and I couldn’t see out of my left eye.

“It’s much better. The pain has gone and I can’t feel anything anymore. It’s still a bit red, but I hope that clears up over time.”

Liverpool were dealt a ‘reality check’ as they lost to Napoli on Wednesday night, according to Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Anfield side were beaten by a last-minute Lorenzo Insigne goal, but Napoli had been the dominant side throughout the game. Liverpool are now winless in their last three games in all competitions.

The Reds fialed to record a single shot on target in the Champions League for the first time since 2006. Wijnaldum was gracious in defeat, admitting that Napoli had done enough to earn the three points.

“You’re always disappointed when you lose a game. We didn’t play well and they deserved to win. They had a good chance before the goal,” he told the club website.

“They were calmer than us on the ball, they defended well and stopped us creating chances. It was not a good day for us. They deserved to win.

“It’s a good game to learn from. That’s what we’re going to do – we’re going to analyse the game and see what we can do better.

“We know what we can bring, we still have confidence. But this was a reality check on how things must not go. It’s a good lesson for us to get better. We have to take it as a lesson and then we have to carry on.”
