Manchester United  boss Jose Mourinho must sell Paul Pogba if he wants to remain in charge at Old Trafford. That’s the opinion of former Red Devils manager Tommy Docherty. Mourinho has had a public bust-up with Pogba with the two at loggerheads at Old Trafford.

And the World Cup winner was substituted by the Special One during the abject 3-1 defeat to West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday. That has led to speculation Pogba could be off to Barcelona or Juventus as soon as January.

Docherty told the Mirror: “I would just let Pogba go. He clearly doesn’t want to be at the club.

“Some players who are high maintenance but do perform for you can be tolerated. But he blows hot and cold. United should never have re-signed him in the first place. Sir Alex Ferguson let him go for a reason. I’m not a fan of Mourinho – if he was made of chocolate he would eat himself.

“And I have my doubts that he will still be at the club this time next season.Manchester United don’t like to sack their managers and like to give them a good run. But Mourinho must be on borrowed time as he has spent well over £300m. And these constant rows being played out in public with his players won’t have done him any good.

“But if he does stay then he needs to show he’s in charge – and that means getting rid of Pogba as soon as he can. It’s the only way to show he’s in control at the club. Player power has always been around. But the modern player has the wages they didn’t have before. There’s less to lose for a player to clash with a manager so publicly.”

United return to action tomorrow night in the Champions League when they host Valencia. After that Mourinho takes on Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday. Jose Mourinho’s decision to play Scott McTominay in defence left Manchester United players baffled, according to a report.

Young midfielder McTominay was chosen as part of a makeshift back three for United’s trip to West Ham which ended in a dismal 3-1 defeat, turning the screw tighter on Mourinho.

Luke Shaw admitted the performance was ‘horrendous’ while United’s problems have even put Juan Mata off blogging. The squad was especially perplexed by Mourinho decision to play McTominay in defence, while Eric Bailly watched from the bench.

According to the Manchester Evening News, which quotes ‘a dressing room source’, the United players felt the selection “made no sense”.Mourinho explained his thinking after the game when he took the opportunity to defend McTominay and suggest his players follow the youngster’s lead.

“I felt we needed quality on the ball on the building up from the back and Scott McTominay has that quality with the ball,” Mourinho said. Everything that left his foot was correct, was accurate, the passes to Ashley Young on the right, the passes to Nemanja Matic, the passes to the striker, everything was accurate from him. A part of a special character, a special personality, that a team in a negative moment needs this kind of mentality like Scott McTominay has.”
