Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have slammed Manchester United’s players after the dismal defeat to West Ham.

The Hammers took an early lead at the London Stadium as summer signing Felipe Anderson turned home Pablo Zabaleta’s cross.

United found themselves 2-0 behind at half-time after Victor Lindelof’s own goal just before the break.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench and scored a superb flick from a corner, but Marko Arnautovic put the game to bed less than three minutes later after being played through by Man of the Match Mark Noble.

Ferdinand and Scholes tore into United’s players after the defeat and questioned their attitude and fight.

Ferdinnd said, “As a football player, part of your DNA is hard work and effort. Today I didn’t see that. When you come to a place like this you’ve got to put your opponent under pressure. Chelsea came here and had 70 per cent possession. One player made 180 passes. I’d be surprised if United had 180 passes combined. It’s criminal from United, you’ve got to work hard. There’s no passion to work hard. ‘I don’t see enough players working hard. That’s the problem. You’ve got to grind, work hard, they didn’t. But credit to West Ham, they played superbly.”

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Scholes added: “That’s as bad as I’ve seen Manchester United for quite some time. The attitude just wasn’t there again. It’s been questioned and it will be questioned again. The hunger and desire wasn’t there. West Ham were fantastic, though. Rice and Noble were fantastic in midfield and the front three , especially Arnautovic  were brilliant.’
