England International Daniel Sturridge has apologised to Chelsea fans for celebrating his overhead kick in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat at Anfield.

The 29-year-old forward broke the deadlock in style on Merseyside before goals from Emerson and Eden Hazard secured Chelsea’s place in the fourth round of the competition.

Sturridge then had to settle for a place on the bench on Saturday but replaced James Milner in the 86th minute before doubling his tally for the week with a stunning long-range equaliser for the Reds.

The England striker scored 24 goals in 96 appearances for Chelsea before joining Liverpool in 2013 and decided not to celebrate his wonder goal at Stamford Bridge.

However, Sturridge couldn’t contain his emotions after his effort during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat and sent an apologetic message to his former club.

He said after Liverpool’s draw with Chelsea in the Premier League. “What a game to be a part of man, the boys worked their socks off and we deserved that point. Didn’t celebrate today got caught up the other day but I respect Chelsea for everything they did for me. Love to the travelling Liverpool fans top class today! In God I trust always.”
