‘Give thanks to Freedom of Expression’ Rafiki Director Reacts to Ban Lift

The director of Rafiki, Wanuri Kahiu could not seem to hold her joy following the ruling of the high court to lift the  ban imposed on the film which now allows it to be considered for an award in the Oscars.

The film was banned for promoting lesbianism but Justice Wilfrida Okwany lifted it for seven days, during which she has allowed it to be screened to willing adults.

In making the ruling, Justice Okwany cited Kenyan artists who’ve had to flee the country and to seek asylum because their creations went against the grain of societal expectations.

Clearly this is good news for Wanuri Kahiu an kenyans have joined in the excitement

I am crying. In a french airport. In SUCH Joy! Our constitution is STRONG! Give thanks to freedom of expression!!!! WE DID IT! We will be posting about Nairobi screening soon. Follow @rafikimovie
