Real Madrid fans disgusted after Cristiano Ronaldo’s No7 jersey is officially handed to Mariano

Real Madrid fans are furious that new signing Mariano has been handed Cristiano Ronaldo’s old No7 shirt. The Portuguese superstar wore the iconic jersey for eight years in Spain before he completed a switch to Juventus this summer.

After moving to Madrid in 2009, Ronaldo donned No9 until the No7 was vacated by Raul.

And he made history in the shirt by scoring 450 goals in 438 games and bagging 14 major titles. Some teams decide to retire a legendary number out of respect, but Julen Lopetegui’s side have handed it straight to their latest signing.

The La Liga outfit were bombarded with abuse from fans after they posted a video of the 25-year-old being unveiled in the kit.

One said: “No respect for the legend and the only @Cristiano that’s a shame for the club history”

Another added: “Another lack of respect from Florentino Perez in giving the 7 to Mariano.” But one hopeful fan claimed: “It might make it play like Ronaldo… hopefully.”

Ronaldo has turned his iconic name and number into a global brand, called CR7. And Juan Cuadrado handed over the No7 shirt to Ronaldo when he completed an £88m switch to Juventus this summer.

The pressure is on for Mariano, who Madrid re-signed from Lyon for £23million – just a year after letting him leave for £7.5m.

He attracted a wide range of interest this summer after he bagged 21 goals in 45 appearances in Ligue 1 last season.

Mariano was unveiled in the Bernabeu alongside stunning partner Yiaza Moreno on Friday.
