There were incidences of hooliganism in the Mashemeji Derby after AFC Leopards fans turned rowdy after Gor Mahia scored the second in their 2-0 win which handed them the 17th KPL title.
Sports Kenya has banned AFC Leopards from using the facility indefinitely and the club could be slapped with costs for the damage after a section of its fans broke the seats,
The cost of the damage caused by fans during the Mashemeji derby at Moi International Sports Center Kasarani on Saturday 25th August could be as high as Ksh. 3 million.
Part of the statement by AFC Leopards read;
“The home team is responsible for providing security…a derby is a high-risk match and we believe those police officers were not deployed as per the requirements of a match of such magnitude.
“The events leading to Gor Mahia’s second goal, and actions of the referee should be investigated, as such officiating is hurting the game’s reputation…..such officiating incites fans into unwarranted action,”
“The hooligans who were pictured destroying seats at the stadium are not members of our club and we have engaged members who can identify them to help bring them to book for tainting the image of the club,” the statement signed by club Secretary General Oscar Igaida notes in
