Manchester United have been tipped to axe Mourinho and replace him with Zidane just two games into the new Premier League season.
The Red Devils are stuck in a rut at present with speculation rife that all is not well behind the scenes.
Manchester United have played down links to Zidane, insisting they still back Mourinho, despite the 55-year-old being at loggerheads with vice chief-executive Ed Woodward.
Yet journalist Harris, who has worked for the Guardian, New Statesman and written two United books, claim the club talked with Zidane during their pre-season tour of Los Angeles.
“Don’t usually do current affairs, but: “understand” United met Zidane in LA, pre-season. Thanks bye,” he tweeted.

United face a massive game against Tottenham tomorrow, with defeat likely to see tempers flare.
Mourinho has already provided a negative update ahead of the fixture, saying: “I think nobody is happy, obviously.
“But I have enough experience to know that in football you cannot look back for good results, for bad results and you have always to look to the next one. That’s our life.
“So, I’m really happy with the work we did in the week, with the players’ commitment and I look forward for the game.
“You can look at [having to wait until Monday] from two different perspectives.
“By one side I would say yes [it is frustrating] but, on another side, I would say we need time to work and some time to try to recover some players from injury, so it was not bad for us.”
Zidane is currently taking a sabbatical after steering Real Madrid to the Champions League crown last season.
