The ‘Red Devils’ were heavily criticised as they lost in embarrassing fashion to Brighton 1-3, in a match that all of their fans would have expected to win going in to the fixture.

Since that defeat, the media and fans alike have spent a lot of time pouring over the performance in the defeat, the relationship between the manager and his players and the apparent lack of backing that Mourinho received from the club in the summer transfer market.

“I think nobody is happy, obviously,” Mourinho said after their humiliating defeat last weekend.

“I have enough experience to know that in football you can’t look back at good or bad results; you always have to look to the next one.”

Criticism of various aspects of the team has come from almost all quarters, inlcuding former United captain Wayne Rooney calling on Paul Pogba to take more responsability to improve the team’s fortunes.

The side will face another tough test on Monday night, when they face a Tottenham side at Wembley that has won their opening two fixtures.

Wayne Rooney insists that only Paul Pogba is responsible for his form at Manchester United and not manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho refused on Friday to elaborate on Pogba’s comments that his attitude ‘was not right’ during last Sunday’s 3-2 defeat away at Brighton.

Mourinho has faced criticism in the past for not managing to get Pogba to replicate his performances for the France national team.

But Rooney, who scored 253 goals for United over a 13-year period in which he captained the side, believes it is up to Pogba himself to reach the levels expected of him.

Rooney has labelled Pogba a 'fantastic player' but says the midfielder 'has to do it for himself'

‘Paul’s a fantastic player and he has to do it for himself I think,’ Rooney told CNN World Sport.

‘You hear a lot of people saying Jose Mourinho needs to get the best out of him but he needs to do it for himself and prove he’s at that level to help Man United.

‘If they’re going to win the title, he’ll be the main player in terms of them doing that.’

Rooney also believes that Pogba isn’t helped by the fanfare that surrounds him, which is built up by his agent, Mino Raiola.

Rooney said: ‘Surrounding him is a lot of publicity. If Jose can get the best out of Paul this season, that will be a huge plus for United and a step in the right direction of winning the title.’
