Should Firmino be worried with slow star

Firmino is yet to score this season as Liverpool beat West Ham 4-0 and Crystal Palace 2-0 in their opening games. The Brazilian was part of a fearsome trio alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah last season which bagged 91 goals.

Salah and Mane have both found the scoresheet this season though the 26-year-old has not quite hit the heights he managed to last season. But Aldridge, who won the FA Cup and First Division with Liverpool in the late Eighties, has insisted Firmino should not worry.

“In the two games this season he has struggled a bit,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column. “He’s not quite in his stride at the moment, and you could see at Crystal Palace that Firmino wasn’t quite himself.

“I thought Daniel Sturridge or Xherdan Shaqiri could have come on for the last 20 minutes. But Jurgen Klopp has stood by Firmino, and we have to trust him on that.

“Klopp will want to get the Brazilian back on track as soon as possible and I suspect he’ll want to stuck with him for as long as possible. After all, it’s still very early days.

“Liverpool, though, have the options now to change players around that maybe they didn’t have last season.”

And though Salah and Mane have shone, Klopp is adamant there is no competition with Firmino.

“They don’t count the goals of the other guys, they like and enjoy playing together, it’s very good,” Klopp said.

“I love the fact we have the possibility to bring in other players with similar qualities it’s really nice.

“It’s not about the competition between them, it’s strikers who love playing together, I don’t think they are bothered in the moment about specific number of goals, they only want to win football games.

“As a striker – I’m not sure if Sadio is a striker, very offensive midfield player it’s true – they want to win football games and they like the way we play.

“They get benefit of that and give lots back to the team with defensive work. You cannot win football games if you have players that don’t like to work.”
